Description:

The principal objective of Humanitas is :

- To promote the rights of mentally disabled persons in Moldova and to raise public and political awareness of the problems encountered by disabled people.

- To facilitate the access of the people with disabilities, their supporters and specialists in the field to information through contacts, meetings, conferences and experience exchanges regarding treatment and rehabilitation programs.

- Advocating for the development and modernization of the rehabilitation services as well as the social, educational and vocational services.

- To undertake specific projects and research studies aimed to enable the disabled for self-advocacy.

- To organize radio, shows, round tables with disabled persons, their parents, specialists and authorities.

- To promote integration of the people with disabilities from Moldova and their problems into European and world-wide context, via collaboration.

- To influence the political decision concerning people with mental disability at the national, regional and local level.

APDI Humanitas has launched a network of subsidiaries on the territory of Republic of Moldova.

ACHIEVEMENTS

* An international conference "Integrated education" (1998)

* Publication of the magazine "Arta educaþiei" (The magazine is handed out to parents with disabled family members of Humanitas Association)

* Participation in the project "Colaborarea Flandra-Moldova" 1999-2000 – which aims to enhance the living conditions of the people with disabilities from Moldova by setting up a day Centre and an Activity Centre.

* Promotion of the Standard Rules for the Equalization of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities (UN, 20.12.1993, Res. 48/1996)

* Implementation, at a national level of the Action Programme concerning Persons with Handicap, adopted by UN on 03.11.1992, Res. 37/52

* Providing psycho-pedagogical services for people with disabilities at their homes as well as counseling services for their families.

* Defending the rights, Lobbying and Advocating for the persons with disabilities and for their families.

* Training seminars for parents that have in their care kids with disabilities.

* Activities together with: specialists, parents, and community.

* Mass media: On going publications, articles about the situation and problems of people with mental disability in the national news-papers and magazines, Radio and TV broadcast regarding the problems faced by the families which are raising kids with disabilities.

* Raising the awareness of the public opinion regarding the necessity of improving the quality life of the persons with disabilities. Dezinstitutionalization of the mixed type institutions (MTI) for persons with disabilities. Promotion of the reform within the system of the special education and modifying in into a special center of specialized, qualitative assistance.

* Radio and TV Programs dedicated to the promotion of UN Standard Rules on equal opportunities for people with disabilities.

* Documentary Film "Here and Now: the right to live". The film shows the social demographic situation of family with a child with mental disability in the transition period, shows the lack of opportunities for the child with mental disability and his/her family.

* Training and Conferences: Organized with international participation Seminars and Conferences regarding integration of people with disability in the community; Role of NGOs in implementation of integration and inclusion principles.

* Seminar with NFU for parents on NGO capacity building

* Participation at international symposiums, conferences and congresses, with communications regarding persons with mental disability, their integration in the society in Bucharest (1991), San Francisco (1994), Tamper (1996), Oslo (1996), Dresden (1997), Holland (1998), France (1995, 1997), Ireland (1996).

* Services: Providing Psycho-pedagogical services at home of people with mental disability; Parent's psychological counseling

* Resources: All activities are performed on voluntary bases by its members


ACTIVITIES

- Organization of conferences, seminars, symposiums

- Supports and promotes the integration of kids with special education needs in community, indifferent of the type or level of the handicap

- Publishes and distributes periodic materials regarding the integrated and inclusive education.

- Promotion of the representative rights, Lobbying and Advocating for rights of the persons with disabilities and their families.

PUBLICATIONS

Arta Educatiei (The Art of Education) a magazine which discuss problems of families which take care of children with mental disability, promotes the cooperation between special and ordinary schools and describes the problems of "A school for all"

Modern views of the Special Psycho pedagogy Flandra-Moldova Collaboration 2000 - a book in which are described the results of the Project and which promotes the integration in community of the persons with disabilities and the creation of alternative services.
