Description:

The Kenya Association for the Intellectually Handicapped,(KAIH) is a national Non governmental Organization (NGO) registered under the Non Governmental Organizations Coordination Act of 1990, it was started on the 29th March 1996 by parents and friends of people with mental disabilities.

Vision:
To be the leading organization in the realization of the full recognition for the rights of families and persons withi ntellectual disabilities

Our belief / value statement
PWIDs and their families have inalienable rights that can only be realized through their own participation and in partnership with other stakeholders

Overall goal
To advance the Economic, Social and Political rights of persons with disabilities and their families.

Strategic objectives

1.To develop specific objectives for KAIH through the review of the constitution and holding of elections with at least 50% women representation by December 2006.

2.To facilitate the establishment and operationalization of the KAIH secretariat by December 2006.

3.To establish and operationalize a resource mobilization committee to meet the above obligations by December 2007.

4.To establish and operationalize a HIV/ AIDS programme by the year 2009.

5.To promote the Economic, Social and Political (ESP) rights of the PWIDs and their families within the pilot districts of Nairobi, Kitale, Kiambu, Migori, Mombasa and Nyeri by the year 2009

Core functions

1. Mobilization of parents and PWIDs to form support groups, disability awareness creation and education.·
2. Advocacy for policy change·
3. Promotion of education for the PWID·
4. Promotion of Health and especially as it relates to HIV and AIDS·
5. Reduction of poverty amongst the PWIDs and their families.
