European Conference on Millennium Development Goals: Inclusion of People with Disabilities
[Last updated Tuesday, June 5, 2007]
May 14-15, 2007 Bratislava, Slovakia
Inclusion International was invited to participate in the conference on inclusive development which was organized as a part of a project “Disability Mainstreaming in Development Co-operation” funded by the European Commission. Inclusion International presented the findings of our Global Report; Hear Our Voices.
The conference participants examined the ways in which people with disabilities have been included or excluded from each of the UN MDGs. The over 80 participants from developing countries and European partners included representatives from disabled persons organizations, governments, international agencies and development organizations.
Conference participants working in groups developed targets and recommendations for inclusion of people with disabilities in each of the UN MDG areas. Some of the key issues identified as challenges to inclusion of people with disabilities in mainstream development initiatives include the lack of good quality comparative data; the need for support to strengthen the capacity of organizations of people with disabilities and family based organizations.
As the recommendations from the conference become available, they will be used to influence the UN mid-term review of the MDGs in 2007.
For Inclusion International, developing stronger networks and partnerships with others who are working in the area of development is a critical strategy in achieving our goals. This Conference was also an important opportunity to link the MDGs to the new UN Convention as a tool for development.

Launch of the African Campaign on HIV/AIDS and Disability
[Last updated Friday, February 2, 2007]
African Network for Persons with Developmental Disabilities participated at the preparations and the launch of the African Campaign on HIV/AIDS and Disability taking place in Cape Town from the 23-25 of January 2007.
The ANDD was represented by Kgomoco Motsamai from Lesotho Society of Mentally Handicapped, Sandra Ambrose from Disabled Children Action Group from South-Africa and Bettina Thorvik from Norwegian Association for Persons with Development Disability.
About 70 people with different connections to issues about disabilities participated at the conference. Many of them representatives of national and regional DPO, while others were international partners such as Handicap International, Leonard Cheshire International, World Vision International. The objective of the meeting was to further develop strategy and communication tools for the campaign.
All participants agreed that there is an immediate need to address the issue of HIV/AIDS also among people with disabilities and in particular mainstream the issue of disability among HIV/AIDS agencies. Although, maybe it is not the DPO's who should educate and give service to persons with disabilities, it is time for the DPO's and other organisation fighting for the rights of persons with disability to advocate for the inclusion of persons with disability in HIV/AIDS programmes.
This is in particular related to accessible information, direct inclusion of persons with disabilities and their families by support groups and allocations of funds addressing this issue.

Brainstorming session on Needs and Process for an African Coalition on Disability and HIV/AIDS
[Last updated Wednesday, September 28, 2005]
Held at Healthlink Worldwide London, UK July 19, 2005 PREFACE The purpose of this meeting was to bring together individuals and organisations interested in the concept of an African Coalition for Disability and HIV/AIDS and to brainstorm about the initial steps and process toward establishing such an entity. The meeting was not intended to define Coalition objectives or to establish a structure or membership. Rather, the organizers felt that valuable information could be gained and disseminated through this preliminary ad hoc exchange among individuals currently involved in HIV and/or Disability work at the international level.
Africans and people with disability were not represented at the meeting. The organizers apologize for this. However, the draft document Terms of Reference for an African Coalition on Disability and HIV/AIDS (July 2005 version) as well as the meeting agenda were reviewed beforehand and commented on by Mr. Shuaib Chalklen [shac@iafrica.com] in the Secretariat for the African Decade of Persons with Disabilities.
This report is not particularly faithful to the annexed Meeting Agenda. Instead, I record the discussion by general themes, including questions about the genesis of the idea of a coalition, why only Africa, why all of Africa, and so on.
Finally, this report is intended to generate discussion and further exchange about both process and content of an African Coalition on Disability and HIV/AIDS. Please disseminate the report widely and invite reactions, comments and contributions. All correspondence should be addressed to me and I will centralize the information and regularly update those interested.
Sincerely,
Susan Girois, MD HIV/AIDS Coordinator Handicap International +33 4 78 69 67 72 sgirois@handicap-international.org download the whole document here

Despite international investments in development initiatives targeted at people with disabilities, investments by domestic governments in supports to people who have a disability, and commitments by governments to international and domestic human rights conventions, little progress has been made in the actual economic, political or social status of people with disabilities and their families.
