NewsWORKSHOP ON IMPLICATIONS OF THE UN CONVENTION FOR PEOPLE WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES[Last updated Friday, September 9, 2005] Inclusion Europe in partnership with Inclusion International will host this two-day workshop to provide a forum for self-advocates, families and State Parties to explore the implications of an inclusive approach to a human rights convention in Eastern Europe. For people with intellectual disabilities and their families a Convention that will make a difference in peoples’ lives must promote inclusion in all aspects of society. Individual rights can only be achieved in the relationship between the individual and their community, family and nation. While this perspective has been presented by Inclusion International on behalf of its members at United Nations, the particular issues affecting people with intellectual disabilities in relation to achieving their human rights continue to be poorly understood. The objectives of the workshop are to strengthening local capacity of self-advocates and member organizations to contribute to the Convention; to provide governments of the region with a better understanding of the issues affecting people with intellectual disability in relation to the Convention; and to support the development of national processes to anticipate the implementation of a Convention. Some of the key issues to be explored during the workshop include: · · Legal Capacity · Community Living · · Families The workshop will focus on the Eastern European Context but is open to participants from other regions. |
