Mencap’s leader becomes a Dame
[Last updated Tuesday, January 9, 2007]
Jo Williams, Mencap’s Chief Executive, has been made a Dame for services to learning disability in the 2007 New Year’s honours list.
Jo Williams has spent over thirty years working in the social care sector. Since joining Mencap in April 2003 she has ensured that people with a learning disability are at the forefront of everything the charity does.
Jo Williams said of receiving the accolade:
“I am greatly surprised and delighted by the news. I hope that I can take advantage of this great honour to further promote the interests of people with a learning disability and their families and carers. Working at Mencap is a joy. I love my job and it is a privilege to serve in the disability world.”
Brian Baldock, Mencap’s Chairman said:
“This is absolutely wonderful news and is a testament to Jo’s dedication to people with a learning disability. She is an outstanding ambassador for Mencap who always puts others needs before her own. There is still a great deal of work to be done to ensure equal rights for people with a learning disability, and we are all a hundred per cent committed to continuing the fight.”
