Projects and Activities
The national pilot initiative in Zanzibar supported the Zanzibar Association for People with Developmental Disabilities (ZAPDD). In January ZAPDD conducted consultative meetings with 50 families in order to indentify rights related issues affecting people with developmental disabilities. Based on the response from those consultations ZAPDD was able to identify the issues surrounding the rights for people with disabilities and held a workshop to review the policy gaps that affect the capacity of families to support their children with disabilities.
A dissemination seminar was organized in February to review existing legislation and policies and identify subsequent gaps which exist and impact families. The conference allowed ZAPDD to: conduct a review of issues affecting families who care for people with intellectual disabilities; identify discriminatory factors and policy issues affecting the capacity of families to support their family member with a disability; provide training to families on the CRPD; and to work with the government to develop strategies for implementation of the CRPD
